Qualifications, Qualifications - The Basics

If you are thinking of going to university you will usually be expected to have a minimum number of passes, including English and Mathematics in:

  • The General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) for those living in England, Wales or Northern Ireland or

  • Standard Grade/Intermediate 1 and 2 if you live in Scotland

Here are some of the popular post-16 qualifications. Suitable combinations can be drawn from this list:

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced (A) level or Advanced Subsidiary (AS) or Advanced Supplementary

  • Vocational Certificate of Education (VCE) Advanced (A) or Vocational A Level (previously named GNVQ) / Advanced Subsidiary (AS) / Double Award

  • Scottish Highers / Advanced Highers

  • Scottish Group Awards

  • Edexcel BTEC National Certificate or Diploma

  • Scottish Qualifications Authority National Certificate or Diploma

  • International or European Baccalaureate

  • National Vocation Qualification (NVQ) / Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) / Modern Apprenticeship

  • Access to Higher Education Certificate (for students aged 21 and over) 3
