Study/Engineering Courses
What can I Expect?
-
To be inspired
-
To learn how to apply
scientific principles and engineering knowledge
-
To turn your ideas into
reality
-
To solve real-life
problems
-
Plus a whole lot more…
All engineering degree courses
are concerned with the practical application of
science, and are underpinned by mathematics. Some
areas such as aeronautical engineering, structural
engineering utilise mathematics to a greater extent.
During the first year of most
engineering courses you can expect to build upon the
science you have learnt at school or college, as
well as learn the fundamentals of engineering
knowledge. However, it is worth bearing in mind that
each university engineering department will have its
own bias or specialism towards a particular area.
This often reflects the research the department is
currently involved in.
Engineering degrees involve 3
to 5 years full-time study, and you can expect to be
taught via a variety of teaching methods:
-
Lectures - where you will
learn basic principles
-
Tutorials - provide an
opportunity for discussion with other students
-
Laboratory work - will
enable you to put scientific principles into
action/practice
-
Project / Field Work -
gives you a chance to work in a team
Furthermore many engineering
degree programmes provide students with the
opportunity to undertake an industrial placement
within the UK or overseas. Industrial placements are
excellent vehicles for acquiring invaluable
experience in applying theoretical knowledge, as
well as helping to consolidate classroom learning.
