Real Lives
Ed Simpson
Headstart
University & Course:
Surrey University
It can be really hard to
decide in year 12 whether you might love or hate
studying engineering at university, or even whether
you will like university life! A practice run with
Headstart is the ideal solution, offering a four-day
stay at a university, working on real engineering
assignments with real tutors and, of course, getting
a glimpse of the social scene.
Ed Simpson applied for a
Headstart course at the end of year 12 in July 2001
and became one of ten students selected to attend a
special version of the course at the University of
Colorado at Boulder. At the time he had little idea
of what to study at university and the course opened
his eyes to what engineers do and how they work,
particularly in teams. “Our triumph was to cushion
an egg to drop eight storeys without breaking,” he
says. “We managed it with balloons filled with jelly
but other teams recommended melons!” Building rafts
and making boomerangs out of balsa wood cemented
Ed’s interest in aerospace engineering and he plans
to study astrophysics at Surrey University from
October this year.
