Real Lives
Jenny Kimber
Headstart
University & Course:
Oxford
Jenny Kimber did a normal
UK-based Headstart at Cambridge University in the
summer of 2000 and loved being treated like an
undergraduate for a week. “We had lectures on
structures and fluid mechanics, we had homework,
labs and tutorials like real students,” she says.
They took diesel engines apart and reassembled the
bits, stretched metal bars until they broke, and
were able to talk to current undergraduates and quiz
a naval engineer about his work after graduation.
Jenny is now studying chemistry at Oxford University
but recommends Headstart enthusiastically. “It was a
brilliant experience, lots of fun even if you
weren’t interested in engineering as a career. By
the time I actually went on the course I had pretty
much decided that I would do chemistry but I almost
changed my mind because the engineering course was
so good!”
