Real Lives
Clare Joyce
Engineering Education Scheme
I worked in a team of four
with 3 friends from my school. We have to
investigate and recommend modifications to a control
system that would adjust the capacity of a
reciprocating gas compressor.
The team looked at the
principles of the working of a Double Acting
Cylinder. Calculations were then made to establish
the force on the piston. Four methods of operating
the piston were researched and the hydraulic system
was agreed for use in this application.
This system was presented to
the customer who ordered the relevant equipment that
was installed and tested.
I found the whole experience
very exciting and was intrigued as to what engineers
do in real life and how they go about doing it. It
wasn’t quite what I expected because the classic
perception of an engineer is a quiet and quite
boring role. Although I admit I really had no idea
what engineers did before I joined this course.
Yet to my surprise it can be quite enjoyable to do
what engineers do. I have to say that the best part
of my course was meeting other teams and seeing what
everyone else was doing for their projects. The
hands on aspect of the whole project was enjoyable
and given the opportunity I would heartily recommend
it to others.
From something that I hadn’t
considered before I would now almost certainly
consider engineering as a future career.
