Clare Ashford is working for
KUKA Schweissanlagen GmbH, a welding systems firm
based in Augsburg, south Germany. She has a deferred
place to study civil engineering with German at
Cardiff University in October. “I have been
translating, producing orders, company presentations
and even doing some design work,” she says. Clare’s
group did a basic engineering skills course at the
University of Plymouth and then got to grips with
German at a language school in Munich before their
placements – and they have found the language much
easier to learn than they expected. “It’s surprising
how much vocabulary you learn in everyday life,”
says Clare. “Living here has made me much more
mature and independent and I have learnt so much. I
know I will also have more knowledge, especially of
the applications of engineering, than students who
enter a degree straight from A-levels.”
