Job Searching? Here's How

Covering and Speculative Letters

You would normally include a short covering or speculative letter with your CV. A covering/speculative letter is an explanation for sending your CV.

Top Tips

  • Keep your letter short - no more that one side of A4 handwritten, word-processed or typed

  • Make sure it is factual and accurate - always check spelling and grammar

  • Find out to whom your letter should be addressed to

  • Avoid using standard covering/speculative letters - employers can spot them a mile off!

  • Be positive about yourself

  • Briefly make reference to your skills, qualifications and experience that match the employers requirements

Layout

Include your full postal address followed by your telephone number at the top right hand corner.

Include the recipients name and address on the left hand side. Remember to include the department and/or the title and position of the person.
